You can get images from any of the events during Knoxville Fashion Week! Details are at the end of the post.
Following up the incredible behind-the-scenes experience I was able to capture during the Emerging Designers Runway the previous night is quite a difficult task. If you’ve seen my post on it, you’ll know that I was able to tell so many different stories going on out of the public view.
I couldn’t completely abandon my passion for telling stories visually, but I didn’t want to retell the same story with different characters either. Friday night at Knoxville Fashion Week is the first major runway event after two days of momentum-building, but smaller shows. I wanted to do something visually that did justice to the change in magnitude of the event but in was still special in its own right.
Enter stage right: Longtime friend and Belleza Fab 8 model Melanie Howe. Melanie is a beautiful and very talented individual, and her activities reflect her positive and eclectic interests. Not only is she a model, she is also a student at UT and is a local celebrity known as “The Djembabe” (deriving from her precious instrument, the djembe), appearing as a core member of the Knoxville-based country and Southern-rock group, “Southern Drawl Band“.
Melanie and I met in 2006 on UT’s intramural field, in the “One time at band camp” style. We both were marching in the Pride of the Southland, and I (a trumpet player) was placed smack in the middle of the drumline, next to Mel, a young cymbal player. She saved me from multiple times from getting pulled from the famous Pregame show (think opening the T) that day. Later, we went on to form a small-time local cover band called “Siren” which played gigs around Knoxville for two years before the members pursued different goals.
So, I decided to follow the über-talented model as she prepared for her big event that evening: The Brigid Oesterling Runway. In spotlighting her, I also captured many of the Belleza Fab 8 models as well.
Melanie first got her hair prepared by the cream-of-the-crop of stylists: Belleza co-owners Regina Zaouk and Michael Layne. Mel says Michael and Regina have been doing her hair for many years, and it was obvious that they all had an extremely friendly rapport. There were many smiles going around, including me, from being around these three.
After the bodacious big red poof was complete (it looked great!), Melanie joined Belleza Fab 8 model Diana Lowrie for a makeup application by the extremely-talented Christian McNally, who also had quite the sense of humor. Christian transformed the girls to reflect the edgy fashion they’d be donning for the evening, highlighted by quite a unique lip color!
Next, Mel and Diana met with designer-extraordinaire Brigid Oesterling to create an outstanding outfit to wear on the runway. Brigid, while reserved at first from what seemed to simply be the stress of the runway spotlight, definitely rose to the occasion in mixing her unique rubber pieces for each Belleza model. As she dressed each model, Brigid began to show how much she was enjoying the experience with her great smile. Eventually, Mel and Diana were sporting some really incredible and creative rubber-made fashions.
Local fashion photographer Joshua Winstead grabbed Mel for a quick photo shoot to show off her new look. It was really entertaining for me to watch her strike so many different poses for the camera, knowing that most of the fierce looks she was so good at giving were far from her kind and happy personality. I suppose that’s what makes both a good model and a good actor/actress!
Mel and Diana then went out to the public area to mingle with Knoxville Fashion Week guests at Brigid’s booth while the rest of the Belleza Fab 8 were getting ready for the runway appearance. For a few moments, Mel got up on the stage to allow the few photographers already set up to test and optimize their exposures and equipment for the available lighting.
Shortly after that, the Brigid Oesterling Runway featuring the Belleza 8 began in dramatic style! The Belleza shows seem to always bring another dimension of drama to the runway compared to most, and this main event was no different. The Belleza 8 rocked the runway sporting fantastical rubber fashions, much to the pleasure of the full-house. Brigid took the stage to acknowledge her supporters, and the crowd returned the favor with a strong round of applause.
