Sunset at Saint-Georges on the South coast of Haiti.

Lately, I’ve been able to get back to a lot of the images I captured on my last trip to Haiti. We had one of the most beautiful locations to work, as we stayed a stones throw from the beach on the South coast of Haiti near a town called Saint-Georges. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

I’ll be posting more images soon!

Everyone loves lists on the Interwebz, and I’m no different. If you can boil simple content down into simple bullet points or numbered lists, kudos.

Here’s a list I found today that may come in handy for other small business owners like me on how NOT to spend your money, especially early on:

  1. “Bad Advertising – Most new small business owners get bombarded people trying to sell ad space. Do your research and determine if your customer profile matches that of the publishers audience. And don’t commit to long term anything. If they stand behind their product, they should allow you to test it for your business. Chris Sonjeow of LoveBookOnline.com

Following up the incredible behind-the-scenes experience I was able to capture during the Emerging Designers Runway the previous night is quite a difficult task. If you’ve seen my post on it, you’ll know that I was able to tell so many different stories going on out of the public view.

I couldn’t completely abandon my passion for telling stories visually, but I didn’t want to retell the same story with different characters either.  Friday night at Knoxville Fashion Week is the first major runway event after two days of momentum-building, but smaller shows. I wanted to do something visually that did justice to the change in magnitude of the event but in was still special in its own right.

Enter stage right: Longtime friend and Belleza Fab 8 model Melanie Howe. Melanie is a beautiful and very talented individual, and her activities reflect her positive and eclectic interests. Not only is she a model, she is also a student at UT and is a local celebrity known as “The Djembabe” (deriving from her precious instrument, the djembe), appearing as a core member of the Knoxville-based country and Southern-rock group, “Southern Drawl Band“. Whether I’m creating a single image, capturing many images and writing about them, or composing a film, I absolutely love to tell a story.

During Knoxville Fashion Week (Fall 2012), I was able to do just that by documenting the process of putting on a runway event! In fact, when I arrived at Knoxville Lighthouse, rockstar model Amber Borzotra pulled in right after me, so I followed much of her preparation process.

A few local teenage models watch as Amber’s hair is styled while they wait for the rehearsal to begin.

The event was the “Emerging Designers Runway,” which featured many up-and-coming area designers of clothing, jewelry, and other accessories. The featured designers included:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Movie Still

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Movie PosterWelcome to the latest installment of a movie blog series about the best movies you (probably) haven’t seen. Last time, I featured the first foreign film of the series, City of God, and the week before, I wrote about 12 Angry Men, a black and white “old-school” courtroom drama.

(The idea is that I’ll throw out a movie that I think is really great, but isn’t a huge mainstream hit, or it’s not fresh and likely hasn’t been seen in quite a while—if at all. If you have seen it, share what you think about it—and feel free to rip me if you think it’s not worth watching! Then, in the comments, y’all make one movie suggestion as well. It’s that simple, and it’ll be a lot of fun if you’re a cinephile like me.)

This nomination for the best movie you (probably) haven’t seen is probably the first film featured I can truly say is cinema art to it’s core. It’s so complete, has so much depth, and is so creative in plot, thought, cinematography, and emotion, I have really struggled to decide the best way to write about it in a brief blog post. After all, this film is easily in my “Top 10” AND I wrote an entire term paper in a cinema studies class in college on this film and still had a hard time capturing, describing, and analyzing the film.* A masterpiece written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is perhaps more poetic than the verse from which it gets its namesake.

How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d;

The film is based on the lyrics of Alexander Pope‘s Eloisa to Abelard, a poem about a tragic love that leaves the female protagonist, Eloisa, longing for forgetfulness over fondness—the foundation on which Kaufman built his masterpiece.

*I actually did a video term paper analyzing the film, so I didn’t technically turn in a written paper.

Knoxville Fashion Week - Marc Nelson Runway

Knoxville Fashion Week - Marc Nelson RunwayWhile most of the fashions exhibited during Knoxville Fashion Week this Fall were strictly for the women, the Marc Nelson Runway spiced it up with a healthy mix of fashionable men’s and women’s clothing, including a new line of ladies’ tops you can see in the slideshow above.

According to Marc Nelson (MN) founder/designer Marcus Hall, the line is intended to provide clothing with “effortless style” that “bridge[s] the gap between the avant-garde culture of Los Angeles and the traditional style of the South.”

The majority of MN clothing is men’s denim and t-shirts, but we got a special show with some more elaborate men’s items and the simple and fashionable new women’s tops. Much of the MN clothing line is available for purchase on their website.

I’m particularly drawn to this effortless style MN strives to provide. The Henley shirt is one of my favorite shirt styles, and despite not being very in-tune with the fashion world, I do love the “look and feel” Marc Nelson brings to the fashion table for men. Read more

Knoxville Fashion Week – Rick Terry Jewelry Design

Knoxville Fashion Week started off with a bang through the “Rock the Runway” Hair Show by Belleza!

Before the show began, though, many of the most important sponsors and contributors to KFW were setup on the patio at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at Volunteer Landing (the Landing is one of my favorite places in Knoxville) displaying their fashions for the attendees.

Knoxville Fashion Week - Charles Ottolini

Knoxville Fashion Week – Charles Ottolini

I was able to meet a few very nice folks including Mayor Madeline Rogero, Rick Terry of Rick Terry Jewelry Designs, Leah Fritts Dailey of Southern Grace fashion and accessories, Amanda Kilday of Reeds of Gray Jewelry, Charles Ottolini and his fashion and accessory line, accessory designer Alicia Marie, and many, many more. All of these sponsors really do have some great offerings, so if you are into fashion, accessories, or anything in between, give them a look! You won’t be disappointed.

On to the main event! The hair styles presented were off-the-wall, fun, unique, and very creative. The slideshow above really shows off the lengths many hair stylists went to wow the audience. An interesting fact about the show: To emphasize the hair over the clothes, most of the models were only allowed to wear fashions made from recycled materials! How’s that for fun? Read more

Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy
Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy

From the Post-Tribune: Dr. Tony Bennett, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, acknowledges state senator Earline Rogers during a grand opening ceremony for the Roosevelt College and Career Academy in Gary Wednesday Aug. 15, 2012. | Andy Lavalley~Sun-Times Media

More often than not, I am extremely blessed to get to work on projects that are very rewarding.

This happened again recently with the makeover and relaunch of Roosevelt High School (now Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy) in Gary, Ind. This school had been failing in achievement, test scores, and many other vital educational areas for years, so the state of Indiana took over the school and hired a Knoxville-based educational management company to bring the school back to its former glory.

As you can see in the video below, the school is a stone’s throw from the home of the infamous Jackson family, and though Michael Jackson didn’t attend Roosevelt, three of his brothers did and were present during a press event for the school this summer. The Jackson 5 performed one of their first talent shows in the Roosevelt auditorium!
